Unfortunately, this post did nothing but frustrate me...because it's the story of my acting life! I have been doing BG work w/ Central Casting for about a year-and-a-half now and still only have 2 vouchers! 1 of which I didn't receive from them, it was through my agent, and--coincidentally--was my 1st BG gig. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that despite the numerous strenuous roles I have been asked to play for little to no money (or in exchange for a non-union voucher, which really equates to the "little money" I've already mentioned) I received my 2 oh-so-precious golden tickets for my ballet experience. Experience that was shown through my ownership of Ballet gear and literally 5 min. of stretching on camera. 5 min! So funny that a big-time SAG budget deems it necessary to Taft Hartley me because I can provide my own see-through tights and faded leotard. Funny...

I joined AFTRA last August and can't believe I'm already less than 6 months away from the 1 yr. mark. What is soo frustrating is the fact that this is such a struggle for me, an actual actor (there are so many non-actors doing BG work now), dedicated to the hustle, always in training, and wanting to be nothing but an actor. Even the CDs at Central who cast SAG projects have told me that they are very surprised I've yet to receive all of my vouchers yet. I know they can only do so much, but it's still frustrating to hear that vote of confidence w/ no follow-up. Also...I've heard many stories from women--w/ much larger breasts than I--that if they really tried, they really could do more than just "so much."

I go to CD workshops, I do my networking, I send out the approved headshots w/ the resume on the back and the postcards, I pimp out my business cards, I take classes w/ highly recommended teachers who have lists of famous clientele to justify their credibility, I have the well-known agent (who is also my manager, I win w/ that one!), I get the consistent positive feedback needed to validate that this is my niche, I'm notably nice, mannered, but ballsy, and yet...at the end of the day...I am still bombarded w/ signs that the people who truly matter in this industry truly do not see a place for me in this industry.

I know this is what I got into, but it's this whole getting into SAG business and the fact that I didn't expect it (of allllllll the things) to serve as an eye-opener of what a monster my true passion is. I'm just rambling now...Oh, did I mention that I'm Asian? We aren't all like Bai Ling...

This is a great post which I linked to in my own blog post on joining SAG. I think the easiest/best way for people to become eligible for SAG is through a new media project they produce themselves. Full details on my experiences with this here: http://wp.me/pDW7W-in

Thank you for this informative article. SAG has been a mystery to me. My daughter is 9 1/2 years old, and loves acting. She is very serious about it too. Therefore, I am trying to make sure that I learn the business side of her craft. Although Jade is not ready for the LA scene or being a part of the unions yet, it is good to know what others are talking about.
